Fun things for baby (not essential)

A jolly jumper.  These can be picked up new for about $60 or $30 on Trade Me.  Good for developing lower body strength.

For older babies, any item they can make a noise with or bang together can hold their attention....
Balls or anything that can roll on the ground.

Educational toys such as; board books, dvds, music cd's, puzzles, bath toys, wobbly toys, mobiles and of course teddy bears and soft toys.

Remember that any toys with small parts could become a choking hazard. Up to the age of three, children explore things by putting them into their mouths or other parts of their body.  A good size guide is to check if a toy or piece of a puzzle can fit into a film cannister.  If it can don't let any child under three play with it.

Always check that any toys you buy are appropriate for your child's age and remember to supervise your child whilst they are playing with them.  For babies under 6 month olds, you can buy anything they can safely suck or chew on, but not small enough that they can fit the whole thing into their mouth. For older children, buy toys with no parts that are detachable.
