Cot/cot mattressThere are many important things to consider when buying a cot including; In New Zealand the cot must be more than 500mm deep. You can check this by measuring from the top of the mattress to the top of the cot side. Buy a firm mattress that fits into the cot tightly. Make sure that any gaps at the ends and sides are less than 20mm. The spaces between the bars of the cot must be between 50mm and 85mm. Make sure the wood has no splinters or cracks. Ensure the dropside catches lock securely. Measure the four corner posts to make sure they don't stick up more than 5mm. Check for screws or nails that might be sticking out, inside and outside the cot. Ensure there is nothing a baby could use to get out of the cot, like bars or ledges. This warning also applies to toys which can be climbed upon. Be aware that older cots may have been painted with lead based paint. If you are unsure whether an old cot has lead based paint you can contact your local Community/Public Health Service Provider (listed at the front of the White Pages) for advice. Remember you can also contact your local Plunket office for any advice regarding cots. |
