Cot/cot mattress
Choosing a cot: There are many important things to consider when buying a cot including;

Mattress Protector
This is to prevent stains and spills reaching the mattress.

3 sets of sheets
You will need to purchase about 3 sets of cot sheets. 100% pure cotton are the best.

1-2 blankets
Your child might become inseperable from their first baby blanket, so you need to make sure they are; durable, safe and easy to clean.

Pram/Stroller
There are numerous prams to choose from. Make sure you buy a safe product and use it safely. When looking for one look for the following features:

Baby capsule
A baby capsule is used for moving newborns safely in a car. Newborns need a baby capsule because they are not big enough for a car seat. These can also be hired. Contact your nearest Plunket office.

Car Seat
Can be bought or hired. Make sure you know how to use this before your baby comes along.

Baby Bath
The benefit of these are that they are portable. You can bathe your child in the kitchen or lounge if you prefer. An anti-slip bath insert mat is also very useful.

A playgym or mat
These have toys or mirrors that hang over the baby while they lie on their back. Some of them play music when they are touched. It helps to teach babies to focus.

Clothing
You may well be given baby clothes as gifts, but it is always good to be prepared. Here's what you'll need.....

Bibs
You'll need at least 6. Larger ones are better.

Nappies
You can choose from; flat cloth nappies, disposable nappies and modern cloth nappies. You will need newborn nappies for the first 6-8 weeks. Many companies are now selling nappies online.

Change Table
Not a necessity, but can sure save your back from all that bending over.

Fun things for baby (not essential)
A jolly jumper. These can be picked up new for about $60 or $30 on Trade Me. Good for developing strength. For older babies, any item they can make a noise with or bang together can hold their attention.... Balls or anything that can roll on the ground.
